The Perfect Patio: Remy's in Yorkville

by Jaclyn Kasprzak, streets.to correspondent

y first experience started in one of the most recognized areas of downtown.  Known for its great restaurants, it was Yorkville where I was able to find what I was looking for.  I sauntered the streets while passing quaint boutiques and coffee hangouts.  The air was cool but the vibe was warm.  Everyone seemed content with what Yorkville has to offer.

My goal for that evening was to find a patio with a little green, a reasonable priced wine and a variety of appetizers that I could enjoy for a late dinner or into dusk snack, a get-away from the stress of the city.  I thought this might be impossible to find in a place like Yorkville since it is situated right in Toronto’s downtown core.  As I observed the scene my pessimism turned to optimism. I was amazed as to how many beautiful patios I had to choose from in Yorkville.  I chose Remy's.

A flight of stairs took me to a gorgeous view of Toronto’s sky. Because Remy's patio seats up to 300 people, I was seated within minutes of arriving.  I was greeted at my table by a server named Patrick.   He was a very at ease individual and his patients made me feel the same.  We conversed with each other as if we’d been friends for years.  Patrick was very attentive, he was in control.  I never ran out of salsa for my nachos and my glass was always full.  It was great service in every way it could be.

I gulped my wine down and ate my shrimp, which by the way, was delicious.  As the wine kicked in, I felt the need for nicotine.  A young woman beside me was lighting up.  She was more than willing to help me out, she gave me two.  This is a good representation of how friendly the people on the patio were that evening.  Even my trip to the bathroom was enjoyable.  Everyone seemed so happy or inebriated.  Either way I was impressed.  I ventured off to the other end of the patio and discovered a whole other world.  A great patio became an even more incredible outdoor bar.   The beer taps looked so shiny that I had to hang out with a cold, frosty pint of Stella. There I met more friendly people.

This place accommodates every age and for whatever mood you’re in.  The tremendous variety of foods featured on the menu includes appetizers, sandwiches and pizza to more formal dishes such as pasta and seafood.  The restaurant is divided into sections-patio, casual lounge and formal dining room.  Top 40 was kept to a decent level for the outdoor bar.

The best part about Remy's patio was that I was always able to move around without elbowing a handful of people.  Remy's set some tough standards for a patio to live up to.  I now have certain but reasonable expectations for my next patio destination next week - maybe bring a cute guy with me? :)
